The Marantz PMD561 portable digital solid state recorder adds to the long legacy of rugged field recorders from Marantz. The small foot print, along with the easy to use record buttons make this a real winner with professionals. The normal lifespan is the question most asked about the Marantz recorders. We typically see them staying in the field around 6 to 9 years or more, so they are a great investment.
The PMD561 is a compact handheld professional-grade audio recorder that records directly onto SD/SDHC flash media. It’s compact and lightweight, yet it delivers audio recording quality of the very highest caliber, thanks to its sensitive stereo microphone arrangement and superior solid-state recording process. The PMD561 is intended for reporters, safety personnel, researchers, anyone who needs accurate, detailed, reliable in-field recordings. It’s ideal for situations where no-compromise recordings are required, but bulky equipment and separate microphones are not possible or appropriate.
Its hardware feature set includes an integrated high-quality stereo condenser microphone array for ‘point and shoot’ operation, switchable balanced mic/XLR line inputs, as well as unbalanced line outputs on RCA connectors and a secondary unbalanced line input on 3.5 mm mini jack connector.
Measuring just 6.5” x 3.7” x 1.4” (165 x 93 x 36mm) with a highly visible 128 x 64 dots matrix OLED (organic LED) display ensures ease of use wherever recording, playback or setup may be taking place. A high-resolution 24-bit / 96 kHz recording option means quality is never an issue when recording to the supplied SD flash card. Compatibility with SDHC media means cards up to 32 GB in size can be used. In addition, the new built in ‘SD Card Check’ makes it easy and convenient to insert any SD card and check compatibility. High capacity media storage is matched by seven hours recording time from four AA Alkaline / Ni-MH batteries. Drag-and-drop file transfer is supported via the USB port.
The new ‘Retake’ feature allows a simple button press to take you back though the previously recorded audio and create a drop-in point to overdub. This enables easy re-recording part way through unwanted takes ideal for dictation and electronic note gathering applications.
Applications include broadcast, electronic news gathering/journalism, DSLR video, sound effects capture, law enforcement, municipal and courtroom recording, government and surveillance, musicians, dictation for law, medical, education, and meeting recording.

I purchased a Marantz PMD-620 MKII to replace its earlier version the PMD620, which gave up the ghost after about 10 years of solid, failsafe use as a first-class professional grade audio backup. The MKII is almost exactly the same, except it's now all black - and is now made in China rather Japan (the way it is these days). It's a solid, intuitive, easy to use, lightweight and reliable unit - a must for court reporting these days. These units are not easy to find - top marks go not only to Marantz but also to Martel for making them readily available to us.

Wow, a recorder with brilliant clear audio that I can also transcribe from if necessary! I'll buy that! This is my second one. No hassle with keeping microphone cords - just fire up the MKII and you're good to go! Omni-directional microphone, clearly understood buttons, ease of use - great little recorder!

This is the second one I've gotten. Great recorder. I bought the second as a backup. Never had a problem with the first -- like I said...just a backup. Highly recommended and easy to use!

The marantz pmd620 professional handheld digital audio recorder has a superior sound to it. The 2 microphones on the top of the unit pick up voice clearly upto 45 feet. This is really important information if you dont want to use a external microphone. I have used marantz voice recorder for over 6 years now and decided it was time for a new one. So if you are asking me about durability I would tell you, the marantz recorders are a good investment if audio quality is important to you.

I Searched everywhere and this price of $298 is the best deal ever. Plus free shipping. Nice! I use this recorder in my court reporter business and the sound is HD without using any external microphones. It is even better than the videographers audio.

I dont need to use external microphones with this recorder. It has the best internal microphone. Perfect for news gathering or meeting recording.
