How to chose a Digital Professional Voice
Dictation Recorder
There are 2 main types of digital recorders in the world. Consumer
digital voice recorders which use fixed memory and have limited
features. Allot of the fixed memory voice recorders wont be able to
download the audio files to your computer. You can only listen to them
on the recorder itself. The second choice is the removable memory voice
recorders which have a some type of memory card which can be taken out
of the recorder and changed during a break. All of these recorders have
robust features and all of them have the ability to download the audio
files to the computer for emailing. Last of all Voice
recognition does not work like star trek, at its best has many flaws, so
in my opinion it does not work. It will not work for many voice talking
in to the recorder all at once. It has to be trained to one persons
voice only.
- Fixed Memory Recorders
- Re moveable Memory Recorders
Fixed Memory Recorders - only give you a fixed amount of time on a
given recorder. Now, be careful when reading the available recording
times. Much of the marketing materials promote the highest amount of
recording minutes available for the recorder, but at the lowest quality
setting. For speech recognition, recoding of music, recording in loud
areas or recording multiple people all benefit by using the the higher
quality sound. Speach recognition does not work with a more than one
person. You also will need to extensively train a voice recognition
system for many months to achieve a 85% rate.
Re moveable Memory Recorders - give you great flexibility with the
available recording time. The recorder comes with a memory card and you
can expand or get much bigger memory cards. As of this writing, memory
cards can boast 512MB per card. Enough to give you weeks worth of
recording on a single memory card. In some instances, you may have to
keep this memory card for legal reasons in original format.
- Push Button Recorders
- Thumb slide Recorders
Push Button Recorders - may also have the ability to insert
dictation. However, it is sometimes difficult getting to the point of
insert. Some push button recorders do not have rewind review. Just
Rewind. You'll also have to use 2 hands to do this or go through
multiple menus. This makes reviewing your recording almost impossible.
You have to start at the begining of the file and listen to all of the
recording this could be a problem if you have recorder a hour or more.
Thumb slide Recorders - The top of the line recorders have a thumb
slide switch to control it's review and insert capabilities. These are
truly the recorders professionals need. Rewind review capability,
rewind, insert, play and stop. These recorders are currently only
available as re moveable memory type. These recorders have the features
for people who use their recorders everyday.
Transcribers and Docking Stations
All digital transcription systems require you to use a foot pedal
system connected to a computer. You then receive the recorder files
electronically (either by transfer from recorder to computer via a USB
cable, or by way of a memory card reader or cd. Olympus and Philips do
currently have hybrid type systems where either method is used with the
transcribers. The model of the Philips is the 9750 digital transcriber
but you must have a philips 9350 or 9450 digital recorder to work with
the transcriber see
www.martel.com/philips
A transcriber is more than just a foot pedal. It's a foot pedal and
software to work with the foot pedal. Therefore, when making your
purchase, please be sure you have at least 1 foot pedal software for
your installation.
Docking Stations. Docking stations make it very easy to download your
recorder files to the computer. Some docking stations actually recharge
the batteries on your recorder. This is available on the very high end
systems. Available on models
Philips
9350,9450 and
Olympus DS-4000 only.
Software
This is what separates the recorders from each other. The ability to
build your method (workflow) of transcription. Work flow is the ability
to move the files around with little or no intervention from staff.
However, the hardware is only as good as it's software. While all of the
systems come with some basic form of transcribing and
recording/downloading, some systems go way beyond the basic functions
Below is a manufacture breakdown.
Each manufacturer has their strong points and you have to weigh which
functions are most important to you.
Olympus & Philips are the Leaders in Digital Recorders. They both use
the DSS compress software and are compatible with each other.
1. The use of DSS files for small audio files. This makes it best for
emailing or transferring files across a network or the internet.
2. Encryption / Decryption. Using the higher end Olympus recorders, the
recorders and transcribers can encrypt and decrypt data.
3. Super High Quality Recording. Includes Stereo Recording and Stereo Hi
Fi Recording.
4. Software. The DSS Player Pro software included with the higher end
systems allows you to build a workflow from beginning to end of the
document creation. You can automatically download files, convert them,
send them via email or to FTP, encrypt, etc.
Philips - A leader in institutionalized systems such as Hospitals,
Courthouses and other large type installations. Philips has the most
hardware options of any other manufacturer. Plus
1. The use of DSS files for small audio files. This makes it best for
emailing or transferring files across a network or the internet.
2. Voice commands integrated into the recorder. This allows for the ease
of identifying work type or patient numbers and using this information
with the audio file.
3. The most hardware options available.
4. A Digital Desktop Transcriber does not have to connect to a computer
for transcription. Can be used similar to a tape system with the
benefits of digital.
5. SDK Software Development Kit for integration within your own
software.
Sony - Sony keeps it simple by giving you exactly what you need.
Plus, it's high quality recording is second to none. Sony generally
works with .wav files. This is a negative for email documents, but is a
positive if you plan to use voice recognition software, though the voice
recognition is not up par for most people.
1. Keeps it simple with only a few recorders and one transcriber for
digital transcription.
2. Records in native .WAV allowing for high quality recording and high
speech recognition accuracy.
3. Thumb slide available
4. Sony Digital Voice Editor software - to playback and manage audio
files.
